Workshop for FST Mission Statement

-The following has been provided by Scott. The original document will be uploaded onto Basecamp, so please comment/edit/revise these statements as you see fit. If you do so, however, PLEASE BE SURE TO ADD A COMMENT THAT OUTLINES THE CHANGES. This is a collaborative effort, so please contribute your thoughts and insight.

The Green Century Institute has established its Ecocity Development Coordination Group for the purpose of driving the Institute’s Mission of fostering the development of sustainable communities forward.

Under this broader umbrella, within which GCI pursues its various other educational outreach efforts as well, the Mission of the Ecocity Development Coordination Group is to foster through our non-profit leadership the development of a California-based ecocity and cleantech development consortium.

The goals for the fostering of this Ecocity Development Consortium through the Ecocity Development Coordination Group will take several distinct forms:

  1. We will serve as a facilitator and coordinator of contact databases and networking resources relevant to our integrated approach to sustainable development in both the non-profit and for-profit sectors within California;

  1. We will compile systematic updated directories of individuals, organizations and companies from these contact databases and networking resources relevant to integral sustainable development;

  1. We will develop the most comprehensive integrated visual planning tool yet to date (“iSite”) in collaboration with Visual Strategies LLC, capable of organizing and directing the planning process for sustainable developments from start to finish, built upon the foundational taxonomy of WiserEarth’s non-profit directories (and with their support);

  1. We will populate this iSite integrated visual planning tool with systematic directories of for-profit and non-profit resources so that the tool is the directory, integrating them seamlessly together to synergize effective collaboration on ecocity development across both sectors;

  1. We will compile research resources on each of the six main categories (finance, public policy, socio-cultural, technology, built environment, and natural resources) and populate the iSite integrated visual planning tool with this research material;

In terms of getting there, key parts of this will require an investment of capital that we currently do not have access to internally through GCI. If capital emerges from CAEDZ to fund the group, then we should have no problem accomplishing these objectives. Alternately, the key will be for us to evolve this mission and goals document into a formal business proposal to the Green Building Exchange that we be contracted to complete this work as a joint venture under their redefinition as the “Green Building Exchange,” in keeping with their identical desire to form such a California-based coalition. I would propose that we look at agreeing to the drafting of such a proposal at next week’s meeting as a vehicle to move our work forward.
